TIMBERED WAGON

This example shows weathering to a timbered wagon. I wanted to create dirt marks around the vertical stanchions and in the board joints. On this wagon I mostly used Rusty Red, Mud Brown, Sand Brown and Slate Grey. Six coats were applied to this wagon.

First coat - Rusty Red and Slate Grey.

5
Wipe or smudge the dye with a cotton bud or slightly damp tissue. Don't remove dye where you want weathered staining to be. Leave these areas untouched. The more coats that are applied on top of each other the darker these areas get.

6
I found it easier to smudge the dye using a wet cotton bud, but I was using a damp tissue at first.

7
This is the side view after 3 more coats of Rusty Red have been applied. I also added Sand Brown (which is not as dark as Rusty Red), and more Slate Grey.

9
The roof was weathered by spraying 3 coats each of Mud & Sand Brown and a coat of Slate Grey, then with a slightly damp cloth I wiped the roof from side to side, making streak marks.

10
Close up of roof. At first this streaking effect did not work because the cloth was too wet, it took me quite some time to get the cloth just the right dampness to take to just take off the surface coating of the dye. Then I sprayed another coat of Mud Brown over and very gently wiped again.

This is where I have stopped for now, but I can still add or remove dye.
