ARAL WAGON

This example shows how to weather an ARAL wagon to create stains running down from the filler hatches and with weathering near the undercarriage and around projections like the ladder and safety rails. I sprayed 6 coats on this wagon and mostly used Slate Grey and Oil Brown.

First coat - Oil Brown and Slate Grey seem to work best on this wagon. I tested all the colours first before starting. I thought Rusty Red would work well, but it looked wrong.

Wipe or smudge the dye with a cotton bud or slightly damp tissue. Don't remove dye where you want weathered staining to be. Leave these areas untouched. The more coats that are applied on top of each other the darker these areas become. You can stop here, this has taken a minute or so and looks dirty.

7
Re-spray again using Slate Grey and Oil Brown.

Wipe off again with a cotton bud, but leave the dye untouched where you want the weathering stain marks. Also, leave it on where you would like darker weathering, perhaps around the upper filler hatch, hand grips and along the bottom of the wagon. I used a wet cotton bud on this wagon and it work really well.

10
I have finished wiping off the second coat. Here is one of the stain marks, I have not wiped the dye off in this area. I have also left dye on other parts of the model that I would like to look darker and more weathered.

11
Re-spray a little more with Slate Grey and Oil Brown. I also used Sand Brown.

12
Wipe off again, leaving the dye where you would like dark stains.

This is the wagon after spraying and wiping about 6 times.

14
Gently remove the dye to get the detail you are after.

15
Make final adjustments.

16
This is how I have left it for the moment, but if I want it more or less dirty I can add some more Mud or Oil Brown and wipe and smudge some more.

17
I have refitted the ladder and safety rails. I wanted to make a stain mark from the filler hatch down the side of the wagon and this has worked quite well.
